Biobank
Mission
To contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge of various pathologies and provide biological samples from patients for research purposes. These samples are received, registered, processed, coded and cryopreserved at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital Biobank (BioBanco HGM). They are subsequently provided to research projects previously approved by an external ethics committee and scientific committee.
Description
The objective of the HGM Biobank is achieved through the support of the organisations and individuals who collaborate with it, namely:
- Cohorts with defined characteristics of patients with various conditions. The cohort coordinators are responsible for collecting and safeguarding the clinical information associated with the samples. The HGM Biobank currently houses samples from 9 cohorts: the cohort of patients infected with HIV, the respiratory diseases cohort, the endocrinology cohort, the neonatology cohort, the oncology cohort, the rare diseases cohort, the infectious diseases cohort, the cohort of patients referred from the nephrology department and the paediatric intensive care cohort.
- The various hospitals that deposit samples with the HGM Biobank, after signing an agreement establishing the conditions for this deposit. Currently, 57 hospitals throughout Spain participate in the deposit of biological material. Within the Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital, the following departments contribute samples: paediatrics, neonatology, oncology, anaesthesia, nephrology and paediatric intensive care.
- HGM Biobank staff responsible for the management, receipt, processing, cryopreservation and release of the samples.
- Other collaborating organisations include the external ethics committee and scientific committee, which participate in decision-making and evaluate the projects for which biological material is requested from the HGM Biobank.
- And finally, there are the researchers to whom samples are released for excellence projects previously approved by the relevant committees.
All processes carried out at the HGM Biobank are subject to a strict quality management system based on the UNE-EN ISO 9001 standard, under which the HGM Biobank is certified, guaranteeing the quality of the samples and compliance with existing ethical and legal regulations.
Services offered
The HGM BioBank offers the following services:
- Management, preparation, dissemination and monitoring of all the documentation required for the deposit of samples in the HGM BioBank and their subsequent receipt, processing, registration, cryopreservation and release.
- Receipt, processing and cryopreservation of biological material from different cohorts, subject to the prior signing of the corresponding deposit agreement.
- Ensuring the quality, traceability and maximum viability of the biological material stored in the HGM BioBank.
- Recording of the basic information associated with the samples.
- Adaptation of the HGM BioBank database so that the coordinators of the different cohorts can record the clinical and analytical information of the people participating in the sample donation.
- Advice to the coordinators of the different cohorts on the use of the HGM BioBank database.
- Consolidation of the data associated with the samples available in the HGM BioBank, together with the cohort coordinators and the services that deposit biological material.
- Release of samples for research purposes for projects previously approved by the relevant committees.
- Creation and management of new sample collections for the development of research projects, studies and clinical trials.
- Centralisation and management of samples for the development of multicentre studies.

- Regulated teaching (processing techniques, biosafety, quality management, quality controls for biological samples), and tailored training in technical and legal matters related to biobanks.
- Event organisation.
- Scientific article writing.
- Within the Laboratory/HGM BioBank Platform, services are also offered for the standardisation of techniques between different groups or hospitals, and techniques such as ELISPOT and miRNA extraction are carried out for different research projects, studies and clinical trials.
