Translational Research Laboratory in Cardiology

Mission

The Translational Research Laboratory in Cardiology, formerly the Laboratory of Bioartificial Organs and Matrices, is an infrastructure of the Research Institute of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón that forms part of the Organ Platform, whose Scientific Director is Prof. Fernández-Avilés, focusing on the field of Regenerative Medicine.

Description

The laboratory began its work focused on obtaining decellularised matrices from animal and human organs, with the aim of subsequently recellularising them with different cell types, thereby achieving viable matrices that could serve as replacement constructs for diseased organs and not be rejected upon transplantation. Throughout its history, it has strengthened these lines of research in Advanced Therapies with others linked to research in cardiology. At present, it is a Research Support Service that combines basic, preclinical and clinical research focused on understanding the specific processes at the molecular, cellular and organ levels that underlie the broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. The laboratory has implemented various cutting-edge technologies that support translational research in Cardiology and other disciplines within our hospital, as well as other nationally and internationally renowned research groups. These include: Rec different?ellularisation with Bioreactors, 3D Bioprinting, Basic Electrophysiology, Genomics, Transcriptomics,  Metagenomics, etc..

The SAI is managed under the IISGM’s ISO 9001: 2015 quality system, which enables all projects to be carried out reproducibly and with verified traceability, in order to accelerate clinical translation.
