Research Areas
As part of the Institute's strategic evaluation, priority research areas have been defined within the institution according to their social relevance and potential impact on the health of the population, the scientific standing of each area, the existence of well-defined research lines that complement those of other areas, and the capacity to provide effective mentoring to groups at a less advanced stage of research development. In line with these criteria, and following the corresponding internal analysis and discussion and the advice of the External Scientific Committee, seven priority research areas have been defined:
Àrea 7
Pathology of Major Organ Systems and Organ Transplantation
Coordinador
Dr. Rafael Bañares Cañizares
Àrea 9
Research and Innovation Group in Healthcare Management
Coordinador
Sonia García de San José y Rodolfo Romero Pareja
Definición de Grupos de Investigación
Definition of Research Groups
A set of researchers with a shared track record (usually around a group leader), evidenced by a record of joint publications and by access to research funding.
The group must be defined by its research topic and not necessarily by its clinical or departmental affiliation.
Definition and rating of groups
All stable research structures establish their research quality on the basis of their capacity to secure funding and the outputs generated by their research (scientific publications of proven quality, technology transfer, application to the National Health System, etc.). Given the strategic importance of cooperative research, membership of stable cooperative research networks or centres will be taken into account. Finally, despite the difficulty of objectively assessing the importance of participation in clinical trials, such participation will be considered an additional distinguishing factor.
However, the most reliable sources of information currently available are limited to the scientific output and the funding obtained by the groups, parameters that are also commonly used by other centres in Spain, so these elements are in practice the basis of the classification.
The following will therefore be used as initial classification tools:
| Parameter | Evaluation |
|---|---|
| Scientific output | Impact factor / Publication quartiles |
| Funding | Competitive national projects |
| Participation in cooperative research initiatives | Membership of CIBER, RETICS, CAIBER, ... |
ESTABLISHED GROUPS
GROUPS UNDER RECONSOLIDATION (with specific mentoring actions)
GROUPS IN THE PROCESS OF INTEGRATION
- A period of 5 years is established from the assignment of the Emerging category for the group to meet the criteria of the Established group category. If the criteria to be considered an Established group are met and maintained for three years, the change of category may take effect, subject to a request from the group leader and approval by the governing bodies of the IiSGM. Once the five years have elapsed, and depending on its scientific track record, the group will be reclassified as Established or Associate.
- A period of 3 years is established from the moment the criteria for a group to be considered in the Established Group category are first not met until the decision to lose the category. In the third consecutive year of non-compliance, the change to the Reconsolidation group category will take effect and a specific mentoring plan will be established, tailored to the reasons that led to the loss of category. This plan will include, among other actions: actions to step up applications to suitable calls for proposals, access to internal funding, a collaboration plan with internal and external partners, possibilities of integration into other groups, or others. This plan will be agreed with the area coordinators, with the participation of the leaders of the groups concerned. After 2 years as a group under Reconsolidation, its classification as an Established group will be assessed again. If the aforementioned criteria are still not met, the group will be included in the Associate Group category.
- New groups are given a period of 2 years to reach a degree of maturity within the IiSGM, in relation to aspects such as: knowledge of the IiSGM's internal processes, consolidation of collaborative research lines with IiSGM groups, and active participation in IiSGM initiatives (training, events, etc.), even if they meet the criteria to be considered established IiSGM groups. New groups may exceptionally be admitted, depending on their scientific track record, to the Emerging and Associate group categories, subject to a request from those concerned and approval by the governing bodies of the IiSGM, following the procedure set out in the Integration Plan.
