Experimental Operating Room
Mission
Provide suitable surgical facilities and equipment for conducting experiments with laboratory animals.
Description
It is a Research Support Service (SAI) suitably equipped and provided with the materials and instruments necessary to carry out the most common experimental surgical procedures.
The main operating theatre (A) has two special operating tables for animals, one of which is radiolucent to enable X-ray techniques to be performed. A third table can occasionally be installed when the activity requires it.
Equipment is also available for more specific procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery and extracorporeal circulation.
There are also three procedure rooms for small animals in which microsurgical techniques can be performed. Two of them are inside the clean area of the animal facility (interior rooms B and C), while another, smaller room is outside this area (exterior room D). These rooms are used both for microsurgery training courses and for experiments requiring only small animals.
The IiSGM Experimental Operating Theatre SAI constitutes the Surgical Area of the Experimental Medicine and Surgery Unit (UMCE).
Services offered
The basic service provision unit of the Surgical Area is the so-called Surgical Session, which basically involves the use of an operating theatre table or a microsurgery station during a morning or afternoon shift.
- MORNING SHIFT: Starts at 08:30 and ends at 14:00 (5'5 h).
- AFTERNOON SHIFT: Starts at 15:30 and ends at 21:00 (5'5 h).
In addition to this Basic Session, other services may be required: anaesthetists, support staff and other equipment (see rates).
In the case of the procedure rooms for studies involving rodents, use for half a shift is available.
When, due to the characteristics of the procedure carried out on one of the operating theatre tables (e.g. use of X-rays), the use of the other table is rendered impossible, an exclusivity surcharge will be charged.
