A new edition of the Scimago Ranking has now been published. The SIR (SCImago Institutions Rankings) World Report is the most comprehensive classification of the scientific output of academic and research institutions worldwide. It includes all organisations with a significant number of articles (more than 100 in the last year of the five-year period analysed) in Elsevier’s Scopus database, providing information on 4,300 institutions which together are responsible for more than 80% of global scientific output during the 2007–11 period.

In 2013, a new series of SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) reports was introduced, presenting a range of bibliometric indicators and thus revealing some of the main dimensions of the research performance of research institutions, with the aim of becoming a framework for evaluating their research activity.

The report shows the absolute values for six highly useful indicators, designed to help end users understand and evaluate scientific output and its impact: total number of published documents, % International Collaboration, % First Quartile, Specialisation Index (the institutions’ specialisation profile), Excellence Rate, or the ability of institutions to produce high-quality articles, and Leadership (% of articles whose main author belongs to the institution). In addition, the rate of variation (as a percentage) compared with the previous edition is indicated for each indicator.

The number of institutions included in the latest edition was 4,300, of which 218 were Spanish and 73 belonged to the health sector.

The following table shows the ranking achieved by the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in this edition. Since the period analysed is 2007–2011, it should be taken into account that the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón is not yet included (it was established in 2010). Furthermore, this information is obtained from the affiliations indicated by authors in their publications, hence the importance of ensuring that all articles from the IISGM are correctly affiliated.

Therefore, rather than a ranking, the SIR provides us with valuable external information that enables us to compare and analyse the development of our institution.
