HGUGM/IiSGM Biosafety Committee
The Biosecurity Committee has been established as a tool for managing biological risk in the healthcare and biomedical research fields.
Hospital G.U. Gregorio Marañón and its Instituto de investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón established a joint Biosecurity Committee in July 2019, with the aim of advising both institutions and supporting healthcare, research and teaching activities involving the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), biological agents and samples potentially contaminated with biological agents.
At national level, there is no legal obligation to establish a Biosecurity Committee; however, the various national and international biological safety guidelines do include recommendations for establishing such committees in centres where biological agents and GMOs are handled. The launch of a joint Hospital G.U. Gregorio Marañón (HGUGM)-Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón (IiSGM) Biosecurity Committee will provide an effective tool for managing biological risk and complying with current legislation on biological safety (RD 664/1997, Law 9/2003 and RD 178/2004).
The establishment of this Committee gives the Institution a strategic advantage, as the use of advanced therapies in routine clinical practice is becoming increasingly common. In addition, in the field of biomedical research, various public and private calls for project proposals, as well as clinical trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry, require Biosecurity Committees to be in place.
The Biosecurity Committee is multidisciplinary and includes representatives from the Occupational Risk Prevention, Preventive Medicine, Pharmacy, Haematology, Microbiology and Engineering Services, FIBHGM and IiSGM. The CBS is chaired by Dr. Ignacio Sánchez-Arcilla Conejo, Head of the Hospital’s SPRL, and the secretary is Dr. Maribel Clemente Mayoral of IISGM.
Objectives
- Promote training activities in biosafety aimed at healthcare professionals and researchers
- Compile a register of laboratories and hospital facilities where biological agents and GMOs are deliberately handled
- Collaborate in compliance with the regulations in force on biosafety and biological risk
- Collaborate in notifying the Competent Authority of both the facilities and the activities
- Advise healthcare professionals and researchers on compliance with biosafety regulations
- Collaborate in the risk assessment process for facilities and activities involving the handling of biological agents
- Prepare biosafety reports
- Prepare work protocols and procedures in accordance with biosafety regulations
